FCC Fridays

We here at Engadget Mobile tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol' Federal Communications Commission's site. Since we couldn't possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there, we've gathered up all the raw info you may want (but probably don't need). Enjoy!

Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1, how would you change it?

Posted: 26 Dec 2008 06:45 PM CST

Just like last week's How Would You Change, the latest episode is also dealing with one of the snazziest new smartphones to hit the US market. It's certainly not without its fair share of niggles, though, so why not head on over if you've a brilliant idea of how to make SE's XPERIA X1 better? Sure, it's all fun and games, but what the heck is wrong with fun and games? Nothing, that's what.

Nokia dreams up four-way folding Communicator

Posted: 26 Dec 2008 04:38 PM CST

Not that Nokia's current Communicator is in need of a major refacing or anything, but we're always up for some innovation. A recent patent application from the outfit showcases a completely bizarre four-way folding Communicator, chock full of hinges, keys and pixels. In fact, the verbiage spells out a future device consisting of "at least four device parts," leaving open the option for a handset that miraculously unfolds to completely envelope you in a glass case of emotion. Hit the read link for the full dream spilled out in entirely too much detail.

AT&T letting go of 8GB refurb iPhone 3Gs for $99 on contract

Posted: 26 Dec 2008 01:43 PM CST

Ha, you or someone you love just paid full retail for an iPhone 3G a few days ago, didn't you? We've always heard that the best deals come after Christmas, but people just never learn. All smack talk aside, those who didn't get a new cellie under the tree, but did acquire a Benjamin or so courtesy of cash-stuffed holiday cards, can certainly score a big deal today. AT&T is now offering the 8GB iPhone 3G in refurbished form for just $99 with a two-year agreement, while the 16GB refurb is $199 on contract in either black or white. Call us crazy, but we don't foresee these hanging around in stock for too awfully long.

[Thanks, Brenson]

Lenovo's Ophone gets sized up against -- what else -- the iPhone

Posted: 26 Dec 2008 11:44 AM CST

Okay, okay, we get it: everyone knows how big an iPhone is, so this comparison makes sense, we guess -- but both an original and a 3G? Seriously? At any rate, we'll just admire the latest in-the-wild shots of the Ophone, Lenovo's first Android device. We've seen shots of it before, but from this latest impromptu review, we learn that it's rocking a 624MHz CPU, mini USB interface, a 5-megapixel camera, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. We also learn that it's longer, wider, and thicker than the iPhones, though only by the slimmest of margins -- and when you take into account the considerable additional shooting power, we can cut it some slack there. Then again, we doubt we'll ever see one of these in the US of A, however, so it looks like we'll have to sit this one out and wait for another Android device to take our breath away anyhow.

[Thanks, Jason]

Apple files patent for gesture-based text editing

Posted: 26 Dec 2008 09:58 AM CST

An Apple patent unearthed by Mac Rumors named Swipe Gestures for Touch Screen Keyboards suggests a future direction the company might be taking which would substantially change interaction with devices like the iPhone. According to the document, the new system would allow for simple finger gestures like swipes to the left or right to control basic functions of text editing. Some movements outlined in the application include a left swipe for deletion of characters, right swipes for a space, and a swipe down in place of the return key. Of course, these types of gestures are nothing new (and frankly, nothing patentable we suspect), as applications on the company's own devices -- namely the jailbreak-only MobileTerminal -- feature almost this exact implementation of gesture control, and Microsoft has had a similar (albeit stylus-based) concept in WinMo for years. Still, adding in this functionality to the software's existing tools would likely improve navigation and input, and opens the door for solutions to the lingering (and annoying) copy / paste problems Apple seems to have.

TechFaith rolls out first touchscreen WinMo CDMA phone for Mexico

Posted: 26 Dec 2008 09:02 AM CST

Mexican carrier Iusacell has scored itself a nice little exclusive, rolling out the very first Windows Mobile Professional-based phone running CDMA in all of Mexico. Problem is, it appears to be WinMo 6.0 -- a strange choice, considering 6.1 is already getting long in the tooth -- but it's a pretty smart-looking device, and hey, at least it's got EV-DO. The TechFaith-sourced "Moffett" has a 2-megapixel cam, 128MB of ROM and 64MB of RAM, Bluetooth, WiFi, and a 2.8-inch QVGA display, which compares favorably to... well, now that we think about it, nothing that we can think of off the tops of our heads. Sorry, Iusacell, we swear we were trying to be stoked.

Sprint-Nextel paying Virgin Mobile more to ramp up subscribers

Posted: 26 Dec 2008 07:21 AM CST

Listen, we know that something's going on with Sprint -- take the move toward leased access for WiMAX on Clear and the recent big sale of cell towers, for example -- but this is just getting fishier and fishier. Now, it looks like Sprint is trying to up its total subscriber count by paying Virgin Mobile an additional $2 per customer it signs through the end of the year while also dropping the minimum wireless services tab it was previously obligated to pay. Apparently it takes about 11 -- yes, eleven -- Virgin customers to equal the revenue generated from just one Sprint customer, and since the carrier's organic subscriber tally has been on the decline lately, maybe it's starting to rely on its MVNOs to pick up some of the slack.

RIM patents a keypad with wings

Posted: 26 Dec 2008 02:09 AM CST

Someone in RIM (probably someone high up) apparently said, "Hey, you know what'd be great? A candybar Pearl that's narrower for no apparent reason," which caused a team of engineers with advanced degrees to spring into action and craft this doozy of a patent app. The concept is that you start off with a numeric keypad slapped onto a handset that's too narrow to handle even an abbreviated SureType configuration, and when the time comes to type, you swing out ridiculous wings that house the extra keys you need. Obviously, we have no good excuse for giving RIM a hard time about this until it appears on an actual product -- a doomed-for-failure product, may we add -- but you think they could've just saved the application fees on this one, you know?
