Fuze, X1, and a couple Touch Pros: the ultimate WinMo smackdown

2008 was, to say the least, a banner year for Windows Mobile hardware. Windows Mobile software... well, that's another story; we're still patiently waiting for the same thorough overhaul we'd hoped for years ago, but in the meantime, manufacturers have done an absolutely stellar job of taking the platform to its limits and packaging it in ways that could make any smartphone envious. For this first time, VGA screens (and beyond) have come to market en masse, and -- unlike the 8525s, Tilts, Moguls, and XV6800s of yesteryear, the latest batch of QWERTY sliders look like they've actually got a lick of intelligent industrial design in their DNA.

So these puppies are similar, yes, but they're not the same -- so let's take a quick look at what separates the Sprint Touch Pro, from the Verizon Touch Pro, from the AT&T Fuze, from the Sony Ericsson X1 (whew!).

LG debuts dual-SIM KS660 overseas

LG's first ever dual-SIM handset will go down as being the completely forgettable KS660, like it or not. The touchscreen-centric mobile includes a 3-inch 400 x 240 resolution display, an integrated multimedia player, 50MB of inbuilt memory, a microSD expansion slot, FM radio, video recorder, Bluetooth 2.0, USB support and tri-band GSM connectivity. Sadly, you'll only find support for EDGE data, and WiFi is casually omitted as well. Chances are you won't find this one outside of China, Russia and a few nations in Europe when it launches in February, but we get the feeling it won't be sorely missed here in America.

Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic gets torture tested, succumbs to the pain

The same wild and wacky Russians that demolished a Motorola ZN5 are showing the same courtesy to Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic. The so-called Crash Test involves putting Nokia's first Comes With Music-enabled handset through a litany of horrible scenes, including a stay in the local freezer, a fall from grace, a ride in the washing machine, a dip in a freshly brewed beer and, of course, a crushing blow from a vehicle. The preview video is hosted up in the read link, and the full results of how it fared are promised in the near future. Let's just say we're betting the farm it doesn't handle unlimited downloads, calls nor texts very well (read: at all) after this hellish experience.

[Thanks, Adam]

South Korea approves standard for voice over WiBro

We've yet to hear any definitive plans out of Sprint for getting voice flowing over WiMAX-equipped handsets in the States, but it's bound to happen eventually -- and South Korea, one of the torchbearers of the standard with its long-operating WiBro network, is kicking off the party. The Korea Communication Commission has officially ratified a spec for voice over WiBro with service expected to start next year, though there probably wasn't a heck of a lot to ratify since it's essentially the same principle as any other VoIP tech. We're thinking the next challenge is probably getting enough battery juice to yap for longer than five minutes at a time, so yeah, good luck with that, guys.
