| Guts of BlackBerry Bold found to cost $170 Posted: 16 Oct 2008 11:10 PM CDT Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Misc Not that it really matters to consumers one way or another -- after all, if you want a Bold, you'll pay the asking price -- but recent analysis by research firm iSuppli has found that parts and materials used to make the device "cost $158.16, and that assembly and testing add another $11.25, for a total cost of $169.41." Just for comparison, the Curve costs a cool $103 to build, and assuming RIM can sell the Bold to carriers at around $350, it'll net a gross margin of around 45% before R&D costs, software, marketing, shipping and freebies given to obscenely wealthy celebs are taken into account. The report (er, the part about the nice margins) should come as welcome news to shareholders, who have recently been worried that the current economic situation may keep individuals from snatching up new 'Berrys at a breakneck pace. Now, if only RIM / AT&T would let the thing get through testing, we'd be all set to contribute to those margins here in the US. Ahem.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments |
| Handango beating Android Market to the paid app punch Posted: 16 Oct 2008 08:40 PM CDT Filed under: Software, Android Handango is certainly no stranger to the business of hawking mobile apps for cash, and it's using its expertise constructively to beat Google's own Android Market out of the gate this time around. They're getting pretty snazzy with the payment terms, too, allowing developers to offer apps for free (though why anyone would do this instead of just using the on-device Market is unclear), a one-time purchase price, or a number of different subscription terms. Seeing how they'll be the only name-brand clearinghouse in town for selling Android apps any time soon, we're thinking this is going to get some play -- but once the Market gets its act together, we're not seeing the value proposition. Call us lazy, but why would we want to drag ourselves over to a website when we've got the Market waiting for us in the application tab?Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments |
| Samsung shows no mercy, redoes Soul in black and gold Limited Edition Posted: 16 Oct 2008 06:46 PM CDT Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS One of the great things about the original Soul is that despite its heavy-hitting credentials -- 5-megapixel camera, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and OLED-equipped d-pad, just to name a few -- it remains a pretty understated (read: tasteful) slider. Of course, taste isn't for everyone, which is apparently why Samsung has elected to dress up its high-end U900 in black and gold for a "Limited Edition" that commands about a 700 Czech crown ($40) premium over its easier-to-look-at silver counterpart. To each their own, we suppose. The Limited Edition is already available in some markets, and with the high sheen of that classy gold plating, it should be pretty easy to pick out.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments |
| Nokia's N85 reviewed, called better than N96 Posted: 16 Oct 2008 05:00 PM CDT Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA We were always curious why a device that (at least on paper) was superior in a lot of ways to Nokia's N96 wasn't trumpeted as the outfit's flagship device, but nevertheless, an Italian reviewer has made us feel a touch better about our previously ludicrous thoughts. After spending a solid fortnight with the phone, the critic felt comfortable deeming the N85 a "very, very beautiful" handset, also noting that it was "definitely the best Symbian [device]" out there. He even went out of his way to recommend the N85 over the N96 so long as you're cool without DVB-H or a super-snazzy camera. As if you really needed more, he also found the OLED display to be spectacular, the audio quality very satisfactory and the GPS / multimedia functions to be top-notch. Wait, is that the N96 we hear crying? There's no crying in Espoo![Via All About Symbian]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments |

| Sony Ericsson apparently revives W595s at the last moment, directs it to Orange Posted: 16 Oct 2008 02:39 PM CDT Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, Orange, GSM, EDGE You can never be too sure about these things, but unless our eyes are deceiving us badly, Sony Ericsson has performed a successful round of CPR on its once-thought-to-be-canned W595s. The music-lovin' handset will reportedly be available exclusively on Orange and come initially in Dusty Blue. We're told that it boasts a 3.2-megapixel camera, front-panel music control buttons, built-in FM tuner, Bluetooth, an M2 memory card slot and an availability date of "now" in Romania. Keep an eye out at your local Orange store to see if this really is being exhumed en masse -- just make sure to dust off the soil before using it.[Via SEMC Blog]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments |
| T-Mobile's G1 presales aren't "even close" to 1.5M Posted: 16 Oct 2008 01:21 PM CDT Filed under: HTC, T-Mobile, Android A source close to the situation has chimed in to tell us that T-Mobile's G1 presales -- while very strong, and seemingly making the carrier and HTC very happy campers -- are nowhere near the 1.5 million figure being randomly spouted off by Motley Fool. We don't have an exact figure, but to put things in perspective, it took 74 days of real, actual sales for Apple to hit a million iPhones -- which like the G1 numbers here, counted the US market alone. Real question is, what percentage of the presales have been for that crazy brown model, eh?Permalink | Email this | Comments |

| Samsung posts WinMo 6.1 upgrade for Sprint's ACE Posted: 16 Oct 2008 11:11 AM CDT Filed under: Software, Samsung, Sprint, Windows Mobile Right behind its distant GSM cousin that never bothers to call -- not even on your birthday -- Sprint's ACE smartphone from Samsung has now been gifted with a luxurious Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade. Sprint is really playing it up, too, touting that it's bringing an "Enhanced Time-Saving Mobile Experience" to the phone -- and to be fair, it's also allowing the installation of unsigned apps and adding support for turn-by-turn navigation, so we suppose it's a little more than just your run-of-the-mill 6.1 update.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments |
| Nokia's S40-based 7100s gets outed Posted: 16 Oct 2008 09:43 AM CDT Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, EDGE Hard to say if we North Americans will ever see this one (without the kind assistance of an importer), but Nokia's slip-slidin' 7100s has surfaced overseas. The S40-based handset will reportedly boast a QVGA display, 1.3-megapixel camera, built-in FM radio, multimedia player and a microSD card slot. Additionally, you'll find a complete dearth of 3G support, tri-band GSM connectivity, Bluetooth 2.0, Opera Mini pre-loaded and a microUSB connector. Look for it to ship somewhere in Europe sometime before the next decade for around 5,000 crowns ($277).Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments |
| Google implemented remote kill switch in Android, those rascals Posted: 16 Oct 2008 07:33 AM CDT Remember the outrage at Apple's inclusion of a sneaky application kill switch in the iPhone 3G? Yeah, well, Google's got one too. This time, however, it wasn't discovered by some meddling developer, Google owns up to it from right inside the Android Market terms of service: "Google may discover a product that violates the developer distribution agreement ... in such an instance, Google retains the right to remotely remove those applications from your device at its sole discretion"Google then claims that it will make "reasonable efforts to recover the purchase price of the product ... from the original developer on your behalf." This on top of the Android Market's policy which allows you to "return" (er, how, it's electronic?) any application within 24 hours for a full refund. Aw shucks Google, come over here and give us a hug.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments |

As the run-up to the long-awaited release of Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1 continues, the outfit has been kind enough to post up the official 26-page user guide for all to see. Granted, you pretty much know everything that's in there, but if you're looking to hone your battery changing skills before taking possession of one, the appropriate documentation is just a click away.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments |
