T-Mobile myTouch 3G gets unboxed, user guide outed

Posted: 23 Jun 2009 05:44 PM PDT

Can't wait until July to check out every nook and cranny of T-Mobile's version of the Ion / Magic? A couple of tipsters, including one anonymously, have lent us a hand in that department with pictures of an apparent myTouch 3G unboxing, as well as an entire user guide dating back to May 19th. We're still rummaging through it ourselves, but so far we're not seeing anything we didn't already know or see for ourselves with the phone's many other releases. Completionists can hit up the 113-page manual in the gallery below.

[Thanks, Derek]

FCC approves LTE / EV-DO hybrid gear from LG

Posted: 23 Jun 2009 03:17 PM PDT

We're not sure what the LG M13 is, exactly, but we can tell you one very important thing about the mysterious device: it's awesome. We know this because the FCC has revealed some limited documentation about the recent approval, which is where we find out that it's a "Cellular / PCS CDMA / EvDO and 700MHz LTE Device." Translated, that means it'll be able to play both on CDMA networks -- take Verizon's, for example -- and also on LTE spectrum deployed in the 700MHz band, which Big Red just so happens to have recently purchased a whole lot of. This wouldn't be the first time LTE-compatible stuff from LG has garnered FCC love, but it would be the first time we've seen a device that supports both LTE and CDMA -- and considering that Verizon will have both networks operational for years (if not decades) to come, that's a pretty important feature. Any creative guesses as to what this might be, then? A modem, perhaps?

Nokia N97, N86 8GB, E52 all get N-Gage compatibility

Quick, what's easier to find: an E52 or a game that'll run on it? You'd think this is an egregious case of putting the cart before the horse, but you've got to give the N-Gage team credit for being well-prepared -- they're already listing Nokia's new mega-thin business candybar as being compatible with the service. Also on board is the just-released (and still hard to find in many parts of the world) N86 8MP and -- perhaps most notably -- the N97, making the beastly handset Nokia's first S60 5th Edition phone with N-Gage support. How's the experience sans keys? Let us know your thoughts in comments.

Qik now available on Android

Posted: 23 Jun 2009 01:23 PM PDT

Qik, the live mobile video streaming service pioneered on S60, has always set out to tackle as many phones and platforms as it possibly could -- and the latest to get hooked up today is Android, which means you can push video to the world anywhere you've got a T-Mobile signal on that G1 of yours (and all the better if you're in one of those AWS 3G markets). The software's actually already available in the Android Market, so go ahead and test it right now; just put some pants on first, alright? Please, this is a family service.

ColorWare outs custom colors for the Apple iPhone 3GS

If you're anything at all like us, you were just a tad disappointed by the color "options" of Apple's newest foray into the world of mobile phones, the iPhone 3GS. After all, who wants to be limited to just black and white these days? Not us, that's for sure -- and ColorWare's just announced a fix for all that. Pricing for these customs jobs runs $150 for the back of the handset, $20 a piece for the bezel frame and button, and $15 the SIM holder. They'll also do up your earbuds for an additional $15. A small price to pay for beauty, no? Another shot of a different color combo after the break.

Find My iPhone reunites true nerd with lost iPhone

Posted: 23 Jun 2009 10:43 AM PDT

You know, we might be inclined to disbelieve this exciting tale of derring-do if it weren't for the highly improbably heroics and ingenuity displayed by its three protagonists -- you just can't make this stuff up. Probably. Kevin, Ryan and Mark were in Chicago minding their own nerdness out at Brickworld when Kevin left his iPhone behind at a dive bar. When they went back for it just minutes later the phone was gone, and instead of calling the cops like a bunch of suckers, Kevin and co. did the right thing and pulled out a Sprint 3G dongle and a MacBook Pro. Unfortunately, Find My iPhone couldn't get a lock on his phone at all -- it was either off or out of data range. The next day at lunch he finally got a delivery confirmation message from me.com, which kicked off a wild, dangerous chase into the wilds of Chicago. We won't spoil the ending for you (he finds the iPhone), but Kevin does raise a couple good points about the service functionality: you need to pull up MobileMe on laptop to use the service (instead of perhaps another iPhone), movement updates aren't pushed, ringer volume impacts alert volume whether the phone is on vibrate or not, and there should be an option for controlling the phone in more nefarious ways like taking pictures. We're glad it all ended up well, but those moments of Lego bliss that Kevin and his friends missed out on are gone forever.

[Thanks, Tristan W.]

Homebrew apps come to the Palm Pre

Posted: 23 Jun 2009 09:31 AM PDT

According to Dieter over at PreCentral, real, honest-to-goodness usable apps are starting to "trickle out" for the Pre / webOS. Apparently utilizing a loophole in the operating system which allows unsigned apps to be sideloaded through email, homebrewers have taken to the interwebs with small utilities like the tip calculator (pictured above). This comes just a day after a group of DIY'ers figured out a workable solution for getting software onto the phone without rooting, so obviously Pre hacking is moving along at a healthy clip. These are -- of course -- very early applications, so don't expect perfection, and there seems to be some concern that Palm might want to patch up this hole, as it leaves the phone vulnerable to less altruistic endeavors. While the latter point is reasonable to consider, we do have a piece of advice for the folks at the front of this movement: don't wait and worry on how Palm will react to this stuff. It's important to push platforms like webOS, and the Pre needs all the love it can get on the development side right now.

Motorola QA1 Karma coming to AT&T June 28

Posted: 23 Jun 2009 09:01 AM PDT

We've been hearing about this one since the wee months of the year, so it's good to see Motorola and AT&T come to the table to finally make it happen. The QA1 Karma follows the ever-popular QWERTY route, this time in a portrait slider configuration (a la Samsung Propel) with 3G, support for AT&T Navigator, a 2 megapixel camera, and a 2.5-inch QVGA display. A little like the Hint, ain't it? Find it in stores starting June 28 for $79.99 on contract after a $50 rebate. Follow the break for AT&T's unboxing (and it's even available in HD, if you're into that sort of thing).

Toshiba TG01 now available on Movistar in Spain

Posted: 23 Jun 2009 07:24 AM PDT

If you're in... say, Spain, we can understand how you might perceive Japan as being a bit far to go just to put your hands on Toshiba's T-01A Snapdragon powerhouse. Then again, it is the first Snapdragon handset to hit the market -- and it's an absolutely stunning-looking phone -- so we certainly wouldn't blame you for packing your belongings, children, and pets into wooden crates, shipping them via freighter, and hopping the next flight to Tokyo. The good news, though, is that you won't have to: Movistar has now launched the phone locally in its global TG01 flavor, offering 7.2Mbps down, 2Mbps up, a flippin' 4.1-inch wide VGA display, and very likely the snappiest Windows Mobile experience you've ever had. The best part is that you can get it for free depending on your contract and plan pricing, so seriously, what's holding you (other than the fact that you might not be in Spain)?

Japan signs off on carriers' LTE plans

Posted: 23 Jun 2009 05:59 AM PDT

It's not often that we have an opportunity to point and laugh at the crushing antiquity of anything in Japan. Look, don't get your hopes up, we can't really do it here either -- but with LTE, it seems like the rest of the world has finally reached technological parity. Japan has just gotten around to approving its 4G carriers' game plans, with NTT DoCoMo likely first out of the gate thanks to deployments in 2010 (around the same time that Verizon expects to have some markets in action). eMobile, Softbank, and current CDMA carrier KDDI will follow on through 2011, with a grand total of over a trillion yen (about $10.4B) being spent in the next half decade. Don't get us wrong -- we're sure the handsets will still be cooler than anything we can get, and they'll likely have the entire country blanketed in 4G before most others have just a handful of cities live, but at least they're not on 5G. Yet.

HTC Firestone possibly rendered again, less blurry this time

Posted: 23 Jun 2009 01:13 AM PDT

Thai site Sanook has what appears to be the first decent render of HTC's mighty Firestone, the yet-to-be-announced heir apparent to last year's Touch HD. Of course, following up a device of the Touch HD's stature is no simple task; for starters, the Firestone tops up with Windows Mobile 6.5, but the big news might be that the Firestone's rumored to be coming out of the gate with an 8 megapixel camera -- a move that would likely put it head-to-head in some respects with Sony Ericsson's rumored XPERIA X2, and at that point, the only question might be how badly you need QWERTY. The Firestone's rumored for an August release, so we could end up with an epic battle on our hands here through the latter half of the year.

[Thanks, Josh]

Palm Treo Pro relaxes out of the spotlight, sheds $150

Posted: 22 Jun 2009 08:53 PM PDT

At $549, you might say that the Treo Pro is a tough pill to swallow in the face of ever-sexier competition from other WinMo devices and Palm's own Pre -- but at $399 fully unlocked, it becomes a more interesting proposition. For four bills, Palm's now offering a fully unlocked, Windows Mobile Professional device with a 320 x 320 display, US-spec HSDPA, and a new-look industrial design that -- in retrospect, anyway -- foretells the Pre's design more than it pays homage to the Treos that preceded it. For the record, that's $150 off, which undercuts some of the traditionally inexpensive resellers like Amazon -- pretty crazy for a first-party store. Any takers?
